REV. WOODY ENÖICARAS
ULC Ordained Minister
Registered Certified Marriage Officiant

BIO: A LITTLE ABOUT REVEREND WOODY
Ordained by the Universal Life Church in 2005, Reverend Woody Enöicaras became an ordained minister so that he could legally perform alternative marriage ceremonies for those (gay, straight, or otherwise) who desired to be wed outside the confines of any particular organized religion. Considered by many to be among the vanguard of the Marriage Equality movement, he has been a tireless advocate for same-sex marriage. Along with NYC Council Speaker Christine Quinn and other community leaders, Reverend Woody was front and center at the National Equality March on Washington on October 11, 2009. A month prior, he became certified by the Office of the City Clerk in New York City to perform legal marriages in the State and City of New York in anticipation of the inevitable and historic passage of marriage equality in New York, which finally took place on June 24, 2011. New York became the sixth state to legalize gay marriage. As a proud gay man himself, he is proud that ALL Americans now have equal rights and protections under the law as guaranteed by the 14th Amendment of the Constitution.

REVEREND WOODY ON GAY MARRIAGE
"First, let me say that I do not only perform gay marriages; I am happy to officiate the ceremony of any two people who wish to marry. That being said, the landmark Supreme Court decision of June 26, 2015 now allows same-sex marriage in all 50 states. I am thrilled to be able to offer my services to all Americans -- gay, lesbian, straight, bisexual, transgender, and queer -- who wish to marry. Marriage is a civil right and it is protected by the 14th Amendment of our Constitution. The right to marry has nothing to do with religion, and as a gay activist, I want to ensure that that right is extended to everyone, and that includes same-sex couples."

GAY -- NOT JUST “GAY FRIENDLY”
"
I’m not merely a “gay friendly” officiant – I AM gay. While I certainly appreciate and am grateful for our straight allies who support Marriage Equality, they simply cannot know our experience, our story. I know what marriage – and the basic civil rights associated with it – means to you. I know our struggle, our history. I know how much the right to marry means to you. I know what it feels like to have a basic civil right that all other Americans enjoy denied to you.

I know you because I am you. And if that matters to you, I am your guy. Your ceremony means as much to me, albeit in a very different way, as it does to you. I take great pride in having the legal civil authority to join two gay people together in marriage -- and that pride is infused into every aspect of your ceremony. I consider it truly an honor to officiate your wedding."

WHY REVEREND WOODY WAITED
Despite being ordained in September 2005, Reverend Woody did not perform his first marriage ceremony until July 30, 2011 – one week after Marriage Equality became law in New York State. Why?

“I was watching family members around me -- my goddaughter, a nephew – happily planning weddings and new lives with their respective loved ones. At the same time, I just kept hearing how my right to marry was being put to a vote in a number of states, the same right that these family members essentially took for granted as undeniable civil rights. I became increasingly disturbed by what I observed going on in this country, a systematic denial of these basic civil rights to LGBT people. I felt frustrated and angry; I also felt compelled to do something about it in a very powerful and personal way. I decided to become ordained in the hopes and anticipation of the day when gay marriage would be legal. I vowed I would marry no one until I could marry everyone. And on June 24, 2011, that dream became a reality in New York State. Today, thanks to the landmark Supreme Court decision issued on June 26, 2015, Marriage Equality is now a reality across the entire United States.”
